Major Bantam Crushers win SPUD tournament in third overtime After going a perfect 3-0-0 in the round robin and only allowing a single goal against, the Crushers were seeded second going into the playoff round. In the quarter-finals Saturday night, they were up against a tough Truro Bearcats squad but walked away with a 4-2 victory. Jarvis Mattatall was named the Crushers player of the game while Tanner Doiron picked up the win between the pipes. The following morning they faced the TASA Bubba Rays Gulls in the semi-finals and won a hard fought game 3-2. Doiron took home player of the game honours. The Crushers then met the Western Hurricanes, currently in first place in the NSMBHL, in the championship game Sunday afternoon. After falling behind 1-0 in the second period the Crushers struck twice with goals from Jacob Pentz and Taylor Publicover to take a 2-1 lead. The Hurricanes pulled their goaltender with a minute left in the third period for an extra attacker and tied the game with only 22 seconds remaining, putting the game in overtime. The first five-minute overtime period consisted of 4-on-4 play where both teams couldn't find the back of the net despite some quality chances. The second five-minute overtime period consisted of 3-on-3 play where again the goaltenders were keeping their teams in it. The game then headed to a five-minute overtime period of 2-on-2 hockey where Blair Dewtie provided the heroics for the Crushers when he batted home his own rebound to take the championship in stunning fashion. For his efforts, Dewtie was named player of the game.
